Fighting between the Popular Resistance and the Houthi rebels

Yemen, Taiz , 06/11/2016. Members of the Popular Resistance and the National Government forces, both backing Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s government, have stormed and gained controlled of the village of Seertin in the southern part of the Taiz governorate, which was under the control of Ansar Allah group, the Houthi rebels. Currently, the battle is continuing, while the Yemeni resistance is gradually advancing in the area.

The fighting over Taiz, Yemen’s third largest city, is part of the ongoing civil war in Yemen in which the forces royal to the President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi and his internationally recognised government have been fighting against Houthi rebels and security forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh. The former party has been supported by Saudi Arabia and a Saudi-led coalition, which has been bombing the Houthis and their allies since March 2015.

Recent United Nations peace talks have so far failed, including the recent visit to Sana’a by UN envoy Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed to discuss a roadmap for peace. The initiative has been rejected by Gulf backed President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, who is still residing in Riyadh. Yemen has been torn by a bloody civil war since the Houthi rebels and their allies expanded from their northern historic strongholds seizing the capital Sanaa and other parts of the country.

The city of Taiz has been besieged by the Houthis since March. The heavy fighting in the city has caused hundreds of people to be killed or wounded. More recently fierce clashes have taken place at both the Hifan and Assilw districts, leading to the Yemen’s national army forces to sustain progress against Houthi rebels in Taiz. Intense clashes have been accompanied by bombardment by the Saudi-led coalition forces, securing the President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi’s forces advance in the south part of the Taiz governorate.
